The Dangers Of Your Teenager Texting At Night

Does your teenager text at night before bedtime?

Most parents would answer yes to that question. Texting has become an addicting habit to many of the young population, and most parents permit their children to bring their phones with them to bed at night because it seems like a harmless idea. In actuality, however, adolescents are putting their wellbeing at risk when they bring their smartphones to bed with them at night.

Adolescents who text at night tend to drop out of a natural rhythm. They stay up late and experience difficulty falling and staying asleep. Teens who text at night also have trouble getting ready for school on time and focusing in class. This, consecutively, can cause failing grades, depression, and sleep deprivation.

The answer to this solution is relatively simple, parents must enforce rules on their children as well as set a good example themselves. According to the Pew Research Center, 72% parents have slept with their phone, compared to 62% of non-parents. If your child sees you next to your phone every night, going to bed with it, scrolling through Facebook and checking emails, they will deem this as normal behavior and do the same.

As long as you set boundaries, smartphones can be a great tool for your adolescent. Talk to your teen and let them know the positives and negatives of cell phone use. It may be a good idea to also discuss what is appropriate in terms of content, language, as well as the times they can use them. A good rule to set in place is to not allow them to have their phones when they are asleep. You may be called “strict” or they may put up a fight, but someday they will be thanking you.
